Regrowth and Resilience:
Exploring the Impacts of Climate Change in Appalachia
BFA Solo Exhibition - S. Tucker Cooke Gallery
Artist Statement
This body of work centers around the increasing severity of climate-related impacts on Earth's ecosystems and communities. As temperatures warm due to human activity and the burning of fossil fuels, storms and natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. Recently, these impacts were observed throughout Western North Carolina when a hurricane devastated an area hundreds of miles from the shore. By using photography as a journalistic art-making medium, I am exploring themes of regrowth and resilience in Appalachia following this impact as well as how climate-related disasters influence an area long term. This project aims to document these impacts and changes, as well as make connections to the need for climate reform.
